Iconic Hairstyles that Changed the Game
Thanks to Bollywood, there will always be new hairstyles for us to try out. From Nargis and Madhubala to Priyanka and Deepika, Bollywood’s heroines have always given us major hair inspiration. So, what were some of the unforgettable black hair hairstyles and the women who popularised them over the years?
1. Fringe benefits
Yesteryear’s gorgeous actress Sadhana was a true-blue trendsetter, introducing the famous ‘Sadhana Cut.’ Inspired by the Hollywood actress Audrey Hepburn, the fringe was simple yet stylish. So popular was the style with Indian women of that era that the cut was named after the actress herself!
2. Back-combed glory
When it comes to the bouffant, there’s only one name that comes to mind - Sharmila Tagore. She made this her signature hairstyle in movies such as ‘Aradhana’ and ‘An Evening in Paris’ and helped popularise this elaborate updo.
3. Sleek appeal
After the large bouffant trend came the smooth and straight hair as the actresses wanted something simpler. Straight hair flicked to the side or parted in the middle was made famous by Zeenat Aman in ‘Ajnabee’ and ‘Yaadon Ki Baaraat.’ The chic and glam look was further popularised by Parveen Babi, Poonam Dhillon and many others.
4. Making waves
Flaunting her naturally thick and wavy hair in popular movies like Saajan and Hum Aapke Hain Koun, Madhuri Dixit made wavy hair look fashionable. She started “the bigger, the better” hair trend, and other actresses too began to opt for more voluminous hairstyles. Our "Dhak Dhak" girl made this iconic hairstyle a style statement.
5. Curling it up
Along with giving us major friendship and road trip goals, Farhan Akhtar’s cult classic ‘Dil Chahta Hai’ also gave us some serious hair goals. Preity Zinta’s wet and bouncy curls complemented her character perfectly and resonated with the youth. It quickly became popular and was the most sought-after hairstyle.
